The five islands of the Netherlands Antilles are divided geographically into two groups: the Leeward Islands (Benedenwindse Eilanden) and the Windward Islands (Bovenwindse Eilanden). The Windward group, off the north coast of South America, comprises the islands of Curaçao, with an area of 444 sq km (171 sq mi), and Bonaire, 288 sq km (111 sq mi).

Aruba separated from the Netherlands Antilles on January 1, 1986, and now enjoys equal status (status aparte) with the Antilles within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Its government structure is similar to that of the Netherlands Antilles. Aruba, one of the three largest islands (the others are Curaçao and Bonaire) withdrew from the federation in January 1986 to form its own domestic government. In 1990, however, Aruba requested and received from the Netherlands a cancellation of the agreement that would have granted independence in 1996. It remains under Dutch protection and, unofficially at least, is still referred to as an integral part of the Antilles group.

Import Duties

Import Duty on cars and motorbikes is 27% + 18% + 5% Sales Tax. Import Duty on parts is 27% + 5% sales Tax.

If a resident imports household goods within the given time-frame you can import one (1) car duty free as long as it has been in your name for at least 1 year before you left the foreign country. It must be your private car and not registered in a company name. You can prove this with the car registration. When the car has been in your name for less than 1 year, you have to pay an import duty of approx. 45% plus the 5% sales tax.

Don't forget that a L.P.G. gas filling station is not available on the island. Only petrol/gasoline is available (regular and lead free), as is diesel fuel.
